Wilton Historical Society presents a lively holiday performance for kids of all ages

“Over The River and Through the Woods” is a delectable peek into Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions of 19th-century America with songs and stories of the period. The program also features children’s songs enjoyed by youngsters of the 1800s and bound to delight kids of today.  It will be performed in the 1860 Abbott Barn during the Great Holiday Train Show.

Presented by Thomas Hooker Hanford, it begins with a rousing rendition of the title song which was composed by Lydia Maria Child, a writer and advocate of the rights of Native Americans, African Americans and women. Wearing mid-19th century costume and accompanying his singing with parlor guitar, fiddle and harmonicas, Mr. Hanford engages the audience with sing along choruses and other participation.

For over 25 years Mr. Hanford has been featured at schools, libraries, festivals and historic sites and events including Old Sturbridge Village and The Hillsborough, New Hampshire Living History Event and such Hudson Valley Historic Sites as Clermont, Schuyler Mansion, Fort Crailo and Sony Point. He has performed several times at the Wilton Historical Society.
