Gilbert & Bennett School History and Documents

History of the Gilbert & Bennett School

Opened in 1916, the Gilbert & Bennett School was the most modern school building in Wilton. Financed by a generous gift from the Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Co. of Georgetown, CT, the school building was design by the renowned architects William and Henry McLean. The building serviced multiple grades for School District no. 10, which included students from several towns within the Georgetown area, including Wilton.

In 1964, the building was deeded to the Town of Wilton, but was shut down as a public school in 1971 as larger, more modern school buildings were constructed to accommodate a growing student population. Since 1971, the building has been the home to two private schools and the G & B Cultural Center under the management of the Georgetown Community Association. As of September 2024, the building was deemed uninhabitable by the Town of Wilton for health reasons.

Below are several resources and documents concerning the history of the school and its ownership history. Please click the links to view each document.
