The famous oration was delivered August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of 250,000. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wove references to the Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg address and the Bible in his “I Have a Dream” speech. His message of equality, call to action through peaceful demonstration, and the power of love over hate resonates as strongly today as it did in more fifty years ago. The annual day of service to honor his vision is a timely opportunity for parents to talk with kids about their dreams for a better world.
Kids can create a cloud wall hanging featuring a white ‘I have a dream’ cloud floating above red and blue ribbons that can be personalized with their own hopes and dreams for community and country. The activity kit for kids and parents was devised by Museum Educator Katherine Karlik and includes materials and instructions for the cloud wall hanging, worksheets, and a list of supplementary book suggestions and links to listen to Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech. Suggested for ages 6 – 12.
